WASHINGTON–The Center for Data Innovation today welcomed the introduction of the FUTURE of AI Act by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA). The Center released the following statement from Daniel Castro, the Center’s director and vice president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), who testified on artificial intelligence in the U.S. economy this morning before the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet:

The United States has established itself as an early leader in AI, but it shouldn’t take its leadership for granted. Other countries such as China, Canada, and Japan also recognize the strategic importance of AI and have enacted strategies to accelerate its development and adoption.

To maintain its leadership, the United States needs a multipronged national strategy to promote AI development and adoption. The FUTURE of AI Act recognizes both the importance of AI and the direct impact it will have on U.S. competitiveness. This legislation would put the United States on the right track to developing an effective strategy to remain globally dominant in AI and allow U.S. firms to better compete by harnessing the productivity benefits of AI.

Castro’s testimony outlined the case for a national AI strategy, including the potential economic and societal benefits, how policymakers can best support AI adoption and use, how to address concerns about workforce disruption, and how to provide appropriate oversight.
