IBM and Devpost, a platform for hosting hackathons, have partnered to launch Sparkathon, a global online hackathon to build weather apps with data sets provided by the Weather Company and satellite imagery company Urthecast. These data sets, which normally cost money to access, include a wide range of weather, geospatial, and climate data, such as hourly weather forecasts 24 hours in advance for a specific location and granular satellite imagery data. Developers of the winning Sparkathon app will receive a $15,000 prize and there are an additional $15,000 in prizes for the runners-up. Developers have until January 20, 2016 to submit their app for consideration.
